About the Organisation

Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) Flexible Schools Ltd currently educates over 2,700 young people in 22 Flexible Learning Schools (12 based in Queensland and 10 other schools across Australia) and two Special Education Services Schools in NSW, with approximately 800 staff nationally. Flexi schools serve young people who experience complex educational, social or psychological situations which demand unique responses. They enable young people to engage in education in a supported learning environment through a methodology based on trauma informed practice, to co‑create a Common Ground using Operation by Principles, in which the principles of Honesty, Respect, Participation, Safe & Legal are embedded. Our special schools serve young people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.

The Centre Education Programme offers a full‑time and multiyear secondary education program for young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling. Flexible Schools respond with a variety of flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices, including vocational planning and the development of social connectedness.

About the Role

The Youth Worker reports to the Area Principal or delegate.

• Support and lead effective learning and teaching programs for young people in both middle and senior phases of secondary education
• Support the physical health and emotional wellbeing of young people
• Develop and implement the schools strategic and operational plans regarding the youth worker roleMaintain a supportive and inclusive school environment
• Build relationships with the school, staff, students, families, industry and community organisations to plan, act and achieve outcomes
• Facilitate engagement of young people with relevant external agencies through appropriate referral pathways and stakeholder meetings

Essential Qualifications

• Paid Blue Card
• Current driver’s licence
• Previous experience in the youth sector with knowledge and understanding of local First Nations communities

Highly Desirable

• An understanding of and commitment to principles of social justice
• Understanding of current youth work practice, trends and issues in service provision to marginalised young people particularly within the alternate education sector
• Sound level of verbal and written communication skills, including participation in meeting processes, report writing and negotiation skills
• Skills in computing (especially word processing, Internet) and ability to develop database skills
• Proven ability to work autonomously and in an integrated manner as a member of a multi‑disciplinary team
• Qualifications at Degree, Diploma or Certificate level with Social Work/Youth Work experience (or working towards a qualification) or equivalent life experience
• Experience with trauma–transformative practice, mental health, and connections to community services highly desired
